Located in the Agaro region of Western Ethiopia, Kolla Bolcha is a washing station that processes the harvests of 759 smallholder farmers. These producers grow coffee on very small plots of land ranging from 0.1 to 2 hectares, about 0.25 to 5 acres. At soaring altitudes of over 2,000 meters, the soil here is highly fertile with good water retention and drainage, making these farms self-sufficient with proper planting practices and they don’t require any fertilizer to produce spectacular quality.
The processing at Kolla Bolcha is meticulous. After ripe cherries are delivered to the washing station, they are pulped to remove most of the fruit and the seeds are left to soak overnight in fiberglass tanks, allowing any remaining sugars to be fully removed from their surface so that the coffee is perfectly clean by the time they are transferred to raised beds, where they will dry for 8 days or more.
This unique geographic location, combined with the excellent processing of the heirloom varieties grown here, results in a very sweet, fruity and yet tea-like cup profile with notes of citrus, stone fruit and toffee.
